Pulp I’ve been Paddling in

The D.A. Calls it Murder by Earle Stanley Gardener: Mystery!

Robot Dreams by Isaac Asimov: Mystery! With added Robots!

Paper View by A.A.Gill: There are fashions in emotions. Pity, sentiment and phlegm are out of favour.

On Broadway by Damon Runyon: He writes only in the first person and almost exclusively in the present tense. This means I always recall these underworld stories as told to me (most likely in a seedy, ill lit bar booth) rather than read. The population (Angie the Ox; Regret; Dave the Dude) and the language (slouchy yet elegant) carry you off.

Don't let me do all the talking.
